2021 Maintenance & Upgrades
Cleaning Freshwater tank June 2021 & Oct 2022
Soon after arriving in Rhoon on July 11, 2021, we contacted reconditioning company ACI specialized in fire and smoke clean-ups. As they make up their quotation they soon notice that the use of powder extinguishers requires a complete cleaning of the interior and electronic equipment. This will rocket the costs! We contact the insurance company Panteanius. They appoint an inspector but fully understand the situation and are very cooperative. The Dutch surveyor appointed by them is also very understanding and reasonable. Finally, the entire interior of the ship is cleaned from top to bottom. All upholstery and a large number of sails that were in the vicinity of the fire are taken to a professional for cleaning and coating. All electrical equipment is removed and taken for washing and drying by specialist AREPA. Very professional. Everything is labeled for proper re-insertion. One by one, all compartments and storage spaces are emptied and cleaned and everything is put back in its place. Getting everything off the boat for cleaning is impossible. We would never know where it came from. It takes a total of 3 weeks, but the ship is spick and span again. We can replace part of the upholstery and mattresses at the expense of the insurance. We decide to replace everything right away. We actually wanted to do that somewhere in the Caribbean much later, but we cannot pass up this opportunity. In the end, this will take quite a few months, but in December 2021 all upholstery and mattresses are replaced. It looks great. The air conditioning in the back cabin will also be replaced in its entirety. We can only say that it was handled very neatly by Pantaenius Hamburg. And not to forget. All powder extinguishers have been thrown overboard and replaced by foam extinguishers, and of course a smoke detector has been installed in every room. We get to know the ship better and better and get to work to carry out maintenance and adapt the ship to our wishes.

July 2022 Complete electrical system updated
The electrical system is the heart of the ship and extents the time of freedom being off grid. The outdated Amel system needs an upgrade. We eventually want to go to Lithium (LiFePo4) batteries because the current gel batteries lost their capacity. Currently off grid we have to run the generator 2x 1.5 hours every day. Secondly we prefer to reduce the number of hours of the generator, have it run shorter periods and at full power. The Amel system actually appears to have no fuses at all on large consumers such as the bow thruster (485 A). Only the end users have 16 and 10 A automatic fuses. So it is decided to overhaul and upgrade the entire system. Based on Lithium (Lifepo4) we also like the possibility of an induction stove. As a result the current 1500 W inverter is changed to a Victron Quattro II of 5000 W. All in all quite a large modification of the current system for which we need professional help. We found Arnold de Maa of ICT Nautic willing to make a proposal and execute the larger technical part of the installation. With help of our friend Joris we install all the wiring and the new solar panels ourselves. The first wire scheme is made in January 2022. Before the summer holidays, the vast majority of the system gets installed except for the new batteries. This way we are able to test the system and find any teething problems. Already we notice a huge improvement. We can use the consumers much freer without worry due to the larger inverter and extra solar with less generator hours per day. After the summer holidays, the new sets LiFePo4 batteries are delivered by PureAcell on 25 August 2022. Two sets of 8 cells each or 7.5 kWh/ 280ah. Total so 15kW/560 AH by 24 V. These are installed end of August, together with the remaining parts. Everything just ready for our yearly sail trip with the Tempo34 group. This time to London. The improvement with the LiFePo4 is enormous. No fear for crew using multiple electrical devices at the same time. We do however discover that the Eve Lithium cells supplied are not the A cells that were ordered. Cell 2 of the SB battery and cell 7 of the BB battery are not ok. A small set-back but Puracell immediately confirms that both sets will be replaced. For the time being, the current sets are good enough to complete this season. An advantage is that we will start our circumnavigation in 2023 with fresh set of A quality batteries. Ultimately, the new sets are delivered by Puracell in March 2023. The last adjustments and fine tuning are made by ICT Nautic and the conversion of the electricity is complete in May 2023 before the start of our circumnavigation.

July 2022 New full cockpit enclosure with raised front completed
One of our priorities is a new (raised) fully closed cockpit enclosure. After a number of quotations we chose “Zeilmakerij Stellendam”. There is a considerable delivery time but on April 20, 2022 Jan Snip started to make the molds. Except for some minor adjustments the new cockpit enclosure is completed and installed on 16th July, 2022. Just in time for our summer holidays also the last details are completed on 28th of July. It was worth waiting. A super nice cockpit enclosure and with a the desired extra height in the front end. Quite an satisfying improvement.

October 2022 The 2022/2023 winter overhaul, maintenance and refit commences
This winter 2022/2023 we are on for a major overhaul of the underwater. The hull appeared to contain osmose and we prefer to treat it in the earliest stage possible and be done with it for the rest of her life. In the mean time we do many other maintenance and preparations . The list is long but little by little we get them all done. A summary can be found in the photos below. At the same time we are cleaning up the house. and sorting, selling and bringing to the second hand shop. By March 2023 we have the house ready to be rented out as soon as we can live on Abayomi. And not to forget we start setting up our website and You tube channel.
